Benefits of a Smile Design

A smile design revitalizes your smile that will endure for many years unlike Botox or other temporary measures. A smile design is an overall important investment in your overall appearance. Smiles can be very sexy and can elevate your overall attractiveness. A healthy, bright, white smile attracts immediate attention and indicates that you are a very friendly sociable person.

Age decreases our smile due to wear, chipping and discoloration. This can happen gradually and can be very embarrassing. Smile designs can get you smiling again creating confidence.

Customizing a Smile Design Plan

Dr. Podilsky will work with you to customize and plan your smile design. A free consultation is arranged to make sure you achieve your cosmetic dental goals and to resolve your underlying dental problems.

The timeline is planned so as to minimize the number of appointments and to make sure your smile is completed in time for your special social function (wedding, engagement, wedding anniversary, graduation, etc.). All other dental diseases are treated first including dental hygiene visit.

Patients are encouraged to bring with them photos of when they were younger or photos of their favorite smile from actors and actresses. The LVI smile catalogue is used to discuss with the patient the arrangement of teeth, their choices in tooth position and what effect this has on their overall appearance. The arrangement of teeth is very important in determining the age of the smile (young versus old) or the sex of the smile (female versus male). A plan is in place before any teeth are prepared.

No two cases are alike. Dr. Podilsky creates a customized smile design especially for you at his Edmonton, Alberta practice.

Commonly Combined Treatments

Some smile designs only require porcelain veneers. Other smile designs will require a combination of Porcelain Veneers and Porcelain Crowns. Porcelain crowns are chosen when teeth are weak such as endodontically treated teeth or teeth will large old restorations (like large old crowns).  Still other smile designs will require minor orthodontics and then thin porcelain Veneers.

Sometimes teeth are missing in the smile zone. This then required either a porcelain bridge with an ovate pontic or an implant with a Porcelain crown. Multiple missing anterior teeth may require multiple implants or an implant supported denture to make the completed smile designs. If too much gum tissue is showing or the gums are uneven when the individual smiles, then a “gum lift” is done with lasers to reduce the amount of gum showing. If only a few teeth are veneered, then the other teeth are whitened before the smile design is completed. This makes sure that the smile is enhanced and brightened.

Smile Design Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take?

Smile transformations can take anywhere from three weeks to several months depending on each individual situations. If the teeth, gums are healthy with a good bite then the time is about three to four weeks depending on your schedule, the lab’s schedule and Dr. Podilsky’s schedule.

If a gum lift is required then one should wait until the gums are healthy and healed. This could take about eight to ten weeks before the smile designs is even started.

If implants are involved then the time line can be increased to six months to a year. This is to allow the implants to get integrated in the bone and to allow for maximum healing of the gums.

Can smokers undergo a Smile Design?

This is not an issue in general but does depend on the type of Cosmetic procedure planned. Smokers do have an increase in periodontal disease or gum disease.

Smoking can also limit teeth from becoming whitened. There is an increase failure rate of implants since it increases the risk of ossointegration to be successful.

How much does a Smile Design cost?

Costs can vary depending on the procedures involved and the time involved. Costs can therefore vary from $10,000 to $30,000. Costs are increased if implants, gum lifts or full mouth rehabilitation is required.

How old does a person need to be before they can have a Smile Design?

As a general rule a person should be over the age of 20 years. Age is also dependent on what type of procedure is required. Whitening can be done on older teens. Porcelain veneers are usually not done until after the age of 20 because they are irreversible. If Orthodontics is involved the individuals should start in their early teens (10 to 12 years of age) to take advantage of their growth spurts.

What is the procedure?

The Procedure is similar to the procedure mentioned previously when we discussed the procedure for porcelain veneers. The exception here is that a smile design involves an entire smile transformation and therefore requires more planning and consultation with the patient.
