Missing teeth endanger your oral health, function, and overall well-being.
Dentures offer an effective solution for replacing natural teeth and reinvigorating your self-esteem.
Since DentaCare Group's founding in 1989, patients have come to us in Downtown Edmonton, AB, for life-changing dentures.
Toothlessness Is More Widespread Than You May Think
6.4% of Canadian adults – or nearly 2 million Canadians – have no natural teeth whatsoever. Many more are missing some of their teeth. Dentures are often the best solution for tooth loss, since they offer vast benefits and avoid many risks.
The Many Benefits of Dentures
Teeth are critically important for routine daily tasks. Missing even a single tooth can impair chewing and speaking. Missing many teeth can make these functions enormously difficult. Our custom dentures can repair your ability to eat and speak with confidence. This also allows you to eat a healthy, well-rounded diet.
Tooth loss affects your appearance even beyond your smile. Natural teeth provide crucial support to your facial structure. Missing these teeth can cause your face to appear sunken and aged beyond your years. By filling in the gap in your mouth, dentures can halt facial decline and improve your appearance.
Dentures often restore a patient's desire to smile. This can increase overall happiness. Researchers at Texas A&M and The University of Tennessee conducted a meta-analysis of over 11,000 scientific study participants from around the globe. They found that smiling does in fact make people feel happier.
Missing Natural Teeth Is a Major Health Risk
The benefits of dentures are made even stronger by the negative outcomes they help prevent.
The open pocket left by a missing tooth exposes your mouth to bacteria. This can in turn lead to infection and gum disease. The risks of gum disease go beyond dental health. Gum disease can spread to the entire body and increase the risk of heart issues and respiratory problems.
Missing teeth also increase the likelihood of other dental problems. For example, teeth naturally shift into gaps in your mouth. This can create a misaligned smile that is more difficult to clean, thereby exposing you to more bacteria and cavities. This shifting can also lead to a problematic bite that can result in teeth grinding and headaches.

Dental Implants Protect Your Jaw
The jaw protection that dental implants provide is invaluable. Natural teeth nourish and stimulate the jaw. Without them, your jaw will likely suffer from both shrinkage and bone loss. This can harm your facial appearance and heighten the risk of infections and disease.
Dental implants are the only restorative dentistry solution that provides jawbone stimulation and prevents dangerous recession. Choosing to support your dentures with implants gives you these major health benefits in addition to the stability implants are known for.

Are Dentures Covered by Insurance?
Yes! Dentures are typically covered by insurance since they are a restorative treatment. Unfortunately, dental implants are not generally covered by insurance. Many patients are willing to take the extra step for implants because they provide major benefits that last a lifetime.
"Implants can cost more than other kinds of replacement teeth and might not be covered by your dental plan. But in most cases this is a one-time cost, unlike other kinds of tooth replacement procedures." Canadian Dental Association
Adjusting to Dentures
You should expect to use a nonabrasive denture cleaner instead of normal toothpaste. You should brush your partial or complete denture after removing it, not while it is in your mouth. Implant-supported dentures are brushed and flossed while in your mouth. Twice annually, our dentists will remove and clean your implant-supported dentures at our Edmonton office.
Eating and Speaking
Partial or complete dentures require an adjustment period, sometimes lasting a few weeks. Patients should start with softer foods, take small bites, and make sure anything they eat or drink isn't too hot. Reading aloud and practicing difficult sounds can help patients learn to speak with confidence. In contrast, implant-supported dentures require less adjustment time, since the implants hold them securely in place.
When to Reach Out For Dentures Repairs or Relines
If you currently have dentures and are experiencing the following problems, you may need a denture repair or reline:
- Denture slippage
- Noise while chewing
- Breakage or cracking
- Persistently bad breath
- Bleeding or sores in the gums
Bridges Are a Potential Alternative
Our Edmonton dentists are here to achieve your goals. If dentures aren't the best treatment for you, we won't recommend them. Some patients have a few consecutive missing teeth that can be replaced with a dental bridge.
A dental bridge fills the gap left by a row of missing teeth. The gap is "bridged" by connecting artificial teeth to existing ones on each side. Bridges, like dentures, can also be supported by implants for optimum support.
