How Can Orthodontics Improve My Quality of Life?

Improved Self-Confidence

Straightening your smile can make you feel more comfortable about your appearance and improve your self-esteem.

Improved Oral Health

A misaligned bite or crooked teeth can have lasting negative effects on your oral health. For example, crowded teeth are harder to clean than properly aligned teeth. Orthodontic treatment can prevent crooked teeth from turning into something worse.

A More Comfortable Bite

When your teeth meet properly, it is easier to chew, speak, and keep your smile clean and healthy.

Orthodontic Solutions Our Edmonton, AB, Practice Offers

For those who suffer from mild to moderate misalignment issues and are seeking a more subtle orthodontic solution, the Invisalign system provides a clear, removable alternative to traditional braces. A series of smooth plastic aligner trays are custom-crafted using computer images and impressions of a patient’s teeth and are replaced approximately every two weeks throughout your treatment plan. The trays need to be worn between 20 and 22 hours per day to produce realignment results similar to those achieved with traditional braces.

In most cases, retainers are only used after braces or Invisalign to prevent your teeth from shifting out of place after your orthodontic treatment. But in very select cases, retainers can address minor spacing issues or mild misalignment without braces. Dr. Podilsky can also fabricate custom retainers for patients whose old devices are no longer working for their needs.

We can also use digital x-rays and our i-CAT® Cone Beam 3D imaging system to visualize all aspects of your bite to improve your overall treatment results.

Braces versus Invisalign  Which Is Best For Me?

Only your dentist can tell you which type will be best to treat your needs, but here are some unique aspects of each treatment to consider:

Braces are a tried and true solution to misalignment issues. These are best suited for children, teens, or adults who have mild to severe teeth and jaw alignment issues. While effective, metal braces can be uncomfortable to the wearer as the brackets rub on their cheeks and lips. Many adults prefer clear aligners so they can straighten their teeth discreetly. Brushing and flossing is much more difficult when wearing braces, and certain foods are off-limits during treatment.

Invisalign is a great solution for mild to moderate misalignment issues. For more severe orthodontic problems, your dentist will probably recommend traditional metal braces for at least part of your treatment. Invisalign is typically preferred over braces as the aligners are a custom fit for your teeth. They are made of smooth plastic and are much more comfortable than metal brackets. They are also removable, so brushing and flossing remain as easy as ever, and you can eat whatever you like.

What To Expect During Orthodontic Treatment

Whether you need Invisalign, or a retainer, the process always begins with consulting Dr. Podilsky.
A good daily oral hygiene routine should be maintained during your treatment.

You will meet with Dr. Podilsky at our downtown Edmonton office to review your oral health history and discuss your treatment goals. He will then recommend an orthodontics solution for you.

Impressions and images will be taken of your mouth and bite to ensure a proper fit.

Your treatment time will depend on the severity of your misalignment issues and which orthodontics device you use. Patients with traditional braces usually wear them for 18-24 months, while patients with Invisalign wear their aligners for 12-18 months.

A good daily oral hygiene routine should be maintained during treatment. Brushing twice daily, and flossing once daily will ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout the course of your treatment. Regular visits to your dentist will be necessary to ensure everything is moving properly.

Final Results

After your teeth have shifted into their desired position, you will need to be fitted for a retainer to help them remain in place. Most often, these retainers are worn for a prescribed amount of time while you sleep after your braces or clear aligners are removed.

Patients of All Ages Can Benefit from a Straighter Smile

Smiling mom and young daughter

While it is recommended that children undergo an orthodontic evaluation by the time they are seven years old, healthy teeth can be straightened at any age. Many young patients undergo early orthodontic treatment to guide their growing teeth into more desirable positions.

You are never too old to undergo orthodontic treatment at our practice, either. Since the advent of Invisalign, which allows patients to discreetly straighten their teeth in the midst of busy professional and personal lives, an increasing number of adults are pursuing orthodontic treatment

A Healthier Smile Is a Phone Call Away

Dental irregularities can interfere with chewing and speaking and lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss. When alignment problems are left untreated, an individual can experience abnormal wear of the tooth enamel, impaired chewing ability, and excessive stress on the gum tissue.

If you have problems with your bite and would like to learn more about orthodontics, contact our Downtown Edmonton, Alberta, office today, and let Dr. Podilsky, and his attentive staff work to determine the best possible treatment for your individual needs.

The Cost Of Orthodontic Treatments

Straightening your smile offers so many oral health benefits that dental insurance often covers the cost of orthodontic treatment at our Downtown Edmonton practice.

Generally, Invisalign is covered by insurance. However, the overall cost of achieving your new smile depends on a variety of factors.

Two Main Considerations  Affect Your Total Cost

Severity of Misalignment

In most cases, addressing a minor issue, such as a small gap between teeth, is more affordable than dealing with a complicated jaw issue. The best way to find out the extent of treatment you need is to speak with one of our friendly doctors.

The Treatment You Choose

Different types of treatments carry their own costs. For example, metal braces are typically the least expensive route to a straighter smile. Opting for a more cosmetic option, such as ceramic brackets or lingual braces, can increase the fees associated with your treatment.
