Improve Your Smile with the Placement of Porcelain Veneers By Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky on August 19, 2015

However, at his Cosmetic, Implant, and Family Dentistry practice, Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky is also interested in helping his patients maintain the beauty of their smile. When blemishes and other cosmetic imperfections compromise the appearance of the smile, porcelain veneers can be placed to mask aesthetic problems. Porcelain veneers conceal flaws and enhance the appearance of the smile. The porcelain veneers placement procedure for our Edmonton patients is relatively painless and results in long-term improvement of the smile.

Candidates

Porcelain veneers address a number of oral cosmetic flaws and are, therefore, an excellent treatment option for many of our patients. If the teeth and gums are healthy, then porcelain veneers can be placed over the natural teeth to address some common imperfections of the smile, including the following:

  • Tooth discoloration and stains
  • Chips and cracks
  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Crooked or misshaped teeth
  • Minor alignment problems

Porcelain Veneers Placement

Porcelain veneers placement typically takes two dental appointments. While this is a simple and relatively painless procedure, it does require that the surface of the teeth be permanently altered. This means that, once veneers have been placed, treatment is not reversible. If porcelain veneers were to become damaged or worn down at some point, they would need to be replaced with a new set of veneers in order to protect the natural teeth.

At the initial appointment for porcelain veneers, Dr. Podilsky will examine the teeth and design a set of veneers that will adequately address any oral blemishes or imperfections. He will customize the size, shape, and color of the veneers to best enhance each patient’s smile. These specifications will be sent to our dental laboratory for fabrication. In the meantime, the teeth will be prepped for placement of the veneers. Although porcelain veneers are extremely thin, Dr. Podilsky will need to remove a thin layer of enamel from the surface of the teeth that are to be treated. Temporary veneers will be placed at the end of this appointment so that patients can enjoy an attractive smile while they wait for their final veneers.

At the second dental appointment, the completed porcelain veneers will be placed. Although the teeth have already been prepared, the surface of the teeth will be filed slightly to create a rough surface. Finally, bonding material will be used to adhere the porcelain veneers to the facial surface of the teeth. Once the bonding material has hardened, patients will leave our offices with a strong, durable, and attractive smile.
