Dental Implant and Tooth Loss Statistics By Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky on June 19, 2022

dental implantDental implants are one of the most popular missing teeth treatments. Dental implants are small titanium screws that are placed into the jaw to act as artificial tooth roots. Implants can support a full range of dental restorations, including crowns, bridges, and dentures. Dental implants provide a strong, comfortable, and attractive replacement for lost teeth.

In addition to the many benefits that they provide, dental implants’ popularity has a lot to do with their need. Tooth loss and oral health problems are a common concern. Here, Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky, of Edmonton, AB, presents dental implant and tooth loss statistics that demonstrate why implants are so widely requested.

Oral Health Concerns in Canada

Data reported by Health Canada shows that dental practices and overall oral health conditions in Canada are improving, but some issues remain a concern. This data is based on the Canadian Health Measures Survey that was conducted by Statistics Canada.

According to the survey, 75 percent of Canadians report that they see a dentist at least once a year, and 86 percent report seeing the dentist once every two years. The general recommendation is to schedule a dental exam and cleaning twice annually, so these statistics are not ideal, but when compared to the survey taken in the 1970s, when not even half of the respondents reported seeing a dentist annually, it is a vast improvement.

The number of individuals reporting oral health problems, like dental cavities and tooth loss, also improved greatly between the 1970s survey and that taken in 2010. The average number of decayed, missing, or filled teeth in children decreased from 6 to 2.5, and the number of adults reporting a complete loss of the natural teeth decreased from 23.6 percent to 6.4 percent. Unfortunately, another 5.5 percent of respondents reported having untreated dental cavities, a condition that can easily lead to tooth loss.

Overall, reported data shows that Canadian oral health care is moving in the right direction, but it is easy to see that there are still areas for improvement, and a clear need for restorative dentistry services, including tooth loss treatments such as dental implants.

How Popular Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have grown in popularity over the past decade. An article published by the Oral Health Group estimated that, in 2005, there were 90,000 dental implant procedures performed in Canada. That marked a 14.2 percent growth from the previous year. As dental technology has improved and implant satisfaction has been proven, the popularity of dental implants has continued to grow.
