Sedation

A sedation dentist usually introduces an anesthetic agent, orally or otherwise, in order to ease dental anxiety and raise a patient’s pain threshold. Dr. Bhasin may use a local anesthetic in conjunction with sedation if needed. There are two basic types of sedation used in general and cosmetic dentistry procedures, conscious sedation and deep sedation, each of which offers unique benefits.

Conscious Sedation

With conscious sedation, a patient retains his or her ability to consciously recognize and respond to stimuli. A minimally depressed level of consciousness is maintained in order to minimize pain and discomfort. During conscious sedation, a patient is put into a relaxed state so that the sedation dentist can perform the necessary procedures. Although many forms of administering conscious sedation exist, nitrous oxide is most commonly used.

Deep Sedation

When deep sedation is administered by a sedation dentist, a patient loses the ability to respond purposefully to verbal commands and other stimuli. With deep sedation, a patient is able to achieve a higher degree of unconsciousness than with conscious sedation, but not as deep as general anesthesia. Deep sedation is usually administered during oral surgery.
