Conditions Corrected by Smile Designs By Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky on September 07, 2014

Girl smilingAre you looking at other people’s smiles and wondering “Why not me?”

The good news is that you can improve your smile. You don’t have to live with a chipped tooth, misaligned teeth, and teeth that are discolored.

What you need is a smile design. A smile design is a treatment plan created just for you that maps out treatment for all the problems that make your smile less than perfect.  Your options run from replacing a silver-colored filling with a tooth-colored filling to porcelain veneers, which can mask multiple problems at once. Or you can tackle restorative work, such as dental implants for missing teeth.

Mapping out your treatment with a smile design ensures your problems are tackled in the right order and on a timeline that keeps your goal in sight.  Combining artistic ability and nearly three decades of experience Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky in Edmonton, Alberta, can create a smile design that gives you a beautiful and healthy smile. He understands the importance of listening to patients’ concerns and providing skilled guidance that results in dazzling smiles.

Among the common problems that can be solved:

Crooked Teeth

If you have teeth that are slightly crooked, porcelain veneers can cosmetically correct the problem and create a stunning smile. Porcelain veneers are thin wafers of porcelain that sit on the front of teeth, cosmetically “straightening” them. Veneers can be applied to just one tooth or multiple teeth, depending on your needs.

Severe Misalignment

If your teeth are severely misaligned, then you may need traditional braces or Invisalign®trays to shift your teeth into alignment. The newer Invisalign®method of straightening teeth uses clear, comfortable plastic trays that slip over your teeth and gently move your teeth into position. Every few weeks you insert a new tray to continue the process. The nearly invisible trays are favored by adults seeking to avoid the metal wires and brackets of traditional braces.

Discoloration

If your teeth are discolored, Dr. Podilsky will examine your mouth to determine the cause, which will determine the best treatment. For people with surface stains, teeth whitening is an ideal solution. Teeth whitening treatments attack stains from food and drink that discolor your tooth enamel. If discoloration is in the interior of a tooth, then other treatments will be required. In some cases, a discolored tooth cannot be brightened. But even then, Dr. Podilsky can recommend treatments to camouflage the discoloration, such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers.

Chipped or Cracked Teeth

Chipped or cracked teeth are distracting, but you can hide these problems with a porcelain veneer on the affected tooth. Because a porcelain veneer reflects light like the enamel on your teeth, a veneer seamlessly blends in with your other teeth to create a natural looking smile. Dental bonding can also be used to restore a chipped tooth’s shape.

Gaps

If you have a gap between two teeth, porcelain veneers or dental bonding can effectively fill the gap.

Missing Teeth

Missing teeth are not only unattractive, they can lead to future dental problems if the remaining nearby teeth rotate or slide into the gap. A dental implant is ideal for replacing missing teeth. In this treatment, a screw-like implant is embedded in the jaw and topped with a crown, which replaces the missing tooth. Other options for missing teeth include dental bridges or traditional dentures.
